The Southern Middle Tennessee Tractor Ride (also known as the Shady Grove Tractor Ride) is an annual event held on the Saturday of the Fourth of July weekend. It begins and ends at the Shady Grove Community Center in Coffee County.
The Ride was created by a small group of tractor enthusiasts from the Shady Grove, Mud Creek, and Pocahontas communities. These enthusiasts wanted to celebrate their tractors in a way that would allow their friends and neighbors to enjoy them, too. After watching other tractor rides on TV and dreaming of participating in the events, they decided to organize their own ride.
The organizers wanted their ride to be long enough for the enthusiasts to really enjoy riding their tractors in a leisurely manner, but short enough to allow local farmers to participate between their necessary daily chores. By curbing the length of the ride (a 3 - 4 hour ride versus a 3-day ride like is held in some Midwestern states), the organizers hoped to help lower the cost of the ride (fuel, wear and tear on the tractors) and attract more participants.
With nearly 30 tractors participating in the 2007 Ride, the organizers considered the first annual Southern Middle Tennessee Tractor Ride to be a great success. Word of the Tractor Ride has spread like wildfire, and a tremendous amount of interest has been expressed in the 2008 Ride.
